Hello from the 6th Armored Division

Bericht door super6th » vr 10 aug 2012, 15:32

My name is Bruce and I am the webmaster for http://www.super6th.org. I am also the administrator for the e-mail group "Family and Friends of the 6th Armored Division".

I have visited the cemeteries at Hamm, Colleville, and St James, and I hope to visit the Ardennes, Margraten, Henri-Chappelle, and Lorraine cemeteries before too long.

We very much appreciate what you do to honor the memory of those who died in World War 2. If you research a member of the 6th Armored Division, please feel free to contact us through the web site, or at the e-mail address super6th at verizon dot net. We can't always find information about an individual, but sometimes we get lucky.

Best regards,

Bruce

Hello Spitfire, Jasper, Meg, and Jac,

I have just sent my first contribution to info@adoptiegraven-database.nl

This is information about T/5 Frank Garrity, who was one of the first men we tracked down in 1999 ("we" being the Family & Friends of the 6th Armored Division e-mail group).

A summary of the story is available in an English language PDF at

http://www.super6th.org/misc/Garrity/fi ... ridged.pdf

if you are interested.

Best regards, and thank you for the work that you do.

Bruce

Thank you, Jasper. I saw Jac's posting today and checked out the new entry. It looks terrific. I have forwarded the link to the Sixer e-mail group. Hopefully Jim Garrity (Frank's younger brother) will see it.

I'm getting a better understanding of the level of detail that you strive to provide. In the future, I will attempt to do more detailed research when I submit a name. You honor very well the men who died in WW 2.

Thank you,

Bruce

Re: Hello from the 6th Armored Division

Bericht door super6th » za 22 sep 2012, 19:38

Hello,

I am planning to be in Maastricht in a couple of weeks, and I plan to visit Margraten and photograph the graves of the Super Sixers interred there:
http://www.super6th.org/cemeteries/6AD_ ... D_UNIT.pdf

I have documented similar visits to Hamm, Colleville sur Mur, and St. James:

http://www.super6th.org/cemeteries/hamm/index.htm
http://www.super6th.org/cemeteries/normandy/index.htm
http://www.super6th.org/cemeteries/brittany/index.htm

I have one question for the members here: I know that the ABMC cemetery staff will make sand available for making the inscriptions in photographs more readable. However, I had not considered this for Hamm and St. James because of the number of graves I was attempting to visit (and did not have time to prepare for Colleville).

However, Margraten has fewer than 50 6th Armored Division gravesites. Would it be excessive or impolite to ask the ABMC staff there for enough sand for that many photographs? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bruce

I find this a hard question to answer. The sand is mostly used, at least that is what I thought, in case of relatives, or veterans, visiting the graves of their loved ones. So I think it may be hard to get all stones inscribed. However, you can always try and send them an email to tell them of your plans. The ABMC staffs are generally very helpful and thus they may be more than happy to inscribe all stones with sand for you.

Thank you for your response, Spitfire. I have always found the ABMC staff to be very helpful. I will contact the Margraten office before heading over.
Thanks,

Bruce

An update to my previous post: Due to a health issue, it was necessary for me to cancel my trip, so I never made it to Margraten. However, I did receive an answer to my question from an associate at the cemetery. It is correct that they only maintain enough sand for a small number of graves at any one time. They are not prepared to provide sand for a large photography session involving many graves.
